For this remodeling project we worked in the heart of Mexico City in the Condesa neighborhood in a 1938 house that is part of the first horizontal condominium in the city, which in its early years was part of the Stahl Film Studios of the time of what was known as ”La época de oro del cine mexicano” the peak of Mexican cinema. Currently all the condominium is protected by INBA and INAH due it is considered cultural heritage of Mexicans.
The houses of the condominium are divided into pairs that intertwine with each other at different levels, in the case of this one it is developed on four levels. The ground floor which is the access, Level one where the common spaces are located with a balcony overlooking the central patio and a bedroom with a full bathroom. On the second level is the family room and two more bedrooms each with a bathroom. the main bedroom has a nice terrace, and finally on the third level there are service spaces and a large rooftop with a panoramic view of the neighborhood.
On the first floor, the original architecture was maintained, as well as a large part of the finishes, for which the decor work was adapted to the existing color palette to highlight the natural beauty of the house. The whole house has a lot of natural lighting so we decided to incorporate a wide variety of plants to enhance the blue tones of the space. The chandeliers and fireplace accessories are original to the house.
For the remodeling of the second level, we sought to maintain the look and feel of the facade and the first level to create a harmonious and consistent space. Therefore, some elements such as the talavera and the handrails were ordered to be manufactured exclusively for the house, taking as a reference the main fence of the condominium and the chimney finishes. As for the rest of the materials and colors, we sought to maintain a vibrant and warm palette that reflects the environment that surrounds the house.
For the top floor we decided to create a family space with a spacious rooftop overlooking the entire neighborhood and the main street, respecting the color and material palette of the rest of the house, adding as a final touch a variety of plants and flowers that match with the once at the terrace of the main bedroom and the balcony on the first floor bringing life and color not only to the outdoor spaces but to the facade.
